Beauty Photography

From The Shoots Issue 4

As part of my work shooting fashion photography there’s also all the other elements within this genre of photography, including accessories, make up, skincare, cosmetics and hair which all go hand in hand.

One of the things I like about shooting beauty photography is creating specific lighting set ups to help emphasise what it is your wanting to viewer to focus on, this image of model Melissa is all about her face and although the image has been changed to monochrome it creates the drama that I wanted from my lighting set up.

The set up I used was just two Profoto B1X flash heads both modified, the light behind was a 150 cm octa and in front was a Profoto soft light reflector(beauty dish), this modifier had a white interior but no grid or diffusion was added to it resulting in a soft even light with soft specular highlights while retaining all the skin detail. The background light because of its size allowed for a wrap around effect on the shoulders and cheek bones, this is my go to lighting for beauty photography and gives truly beautiful results.

my camera of choice for my fashion and beauty photography is a Phase One XF medium format camera with Phase One IQ3 100 megapixel full frame digital back which offers true 16 bit capture and 15 stops of dynamic range, an icredibly powerful camera system with unmatched colour and detail.
